Stair runner length calculator with stair rods

Stair rods are the most commonly forgotten line on a runner order, and they are rarely cheap. The calculator counts them for you alongside the length.

The standard assumption is one rod per step with two brackets each, and a rod length of the runner width plus about 4 inches so the finials sit clear of the edges.

How many rods do I need?

One per riser. A 14 step flight takes 14 rods and 28 brackets. Landings do not take rods. If you are using rods decoratively on alternate steps only, halve the count.

Rod length

Add roughly 4 in to your runner width. A 27 in runner takes a 31 in rod; a 70 cm runner takes about an 80 cm rod. Rods are usually cuttable, but finials are not.

Decorative or functional?

Modern rods are almost always decorative — the runner is held by tackless strip and staples underneath. That matters because a purely decorative rod does not need to be structural, but it does need to sit tight against the riser corner.
