Measuring borders and binding

A contrast border transforms a plain runner, but it changes two things in your order: the amount of edge finishing you buy, and the amount of waste you should allow.

The length itself is unchanged — it is still steps × (tread + riser) plus allowances.

Number of stairs

Count the tread-and-riser pairs the runner will cover. Exclude landings.

How much border tape?

Border and binding are applied to both long edges, so you need roughly twice the runner length. A 23 ft runner needs about 46 ft of border, plus a little for the ends and any join.

Waste with a border

Borders are applied after cutting, so the runner itself must be cut accurately first. Allow 10% on the runner and buy the border last, once the final cut length is confirmed.

Border width and the reveal

A 2 in border on each side makes a 27 in runner read as a wide runner with a frame. Factor the border into the visible width when you check the reveal against your stair.

How much binding do I need for a stair runner?: About twice the runner length, because both long edges are finished — a 23 ft runner needs roughly 46 ft of binding.
Does a border change the runner length?: No, only the edge finishing quantity. Length is still driven by treads, risers, landings and waste.
