Step count

Stair runner length calculator for 16 steps

Sixteen risers is a long domestic flight, and it is the point at which a single continuous piece of runner starts to become a problem.

At 17.5 in per step, 16 steps need 280 in — 23 ft 4 in, or 7.11 m — before allowances.

Your staircase

Start from typical stair sizes where you live

IRC-style stairs: 10 in minimum tread, 7¾ in maximum riser. Runners are usually 27 in or 32 in wide and sold by the linear foot.

Count every step you will cover.

Front edge to back of the step. Fractions like 10 1/2 work.

The vertical face between two treads.

%

10% is a common starting point; pattern matching and winders need more.

Needed when the runner wraps around a projecting nose (Hollywood installs and thick pads). Waterfall installs usually don't need it.

Your measurements, drawn to scale

Side elevation of a staircase. The runner travels across each tread and down each riser, so every step consumes tread depth plus riser height of material.

The 16 step numbers

Bare 280 in (23 ft 4 in). Plus 10%: 308 in (25 ft 8 in). That is 8.6 linear yards or 7.8 m.

Roll length is the real constraint

Many runners are woven in 4 m, 5 m or 30 ft rolls. A 7.8 m order will not come as one piece from a 5 m roll, so plan the seam deliberately rather than letting the fitter decide on the day.

Rods and pads for 16 steps

Sixteen steps typically means 16 rods, 32 brackets and 16 cut pads. At 27 in wide the rods need to be about 31 in long to sit proud of the runner edges.

Questions people ask

How much runner do 16 stairs need?
About 23 ft 4 in (7.1 m) bare, or roughly 25 ft 8 in (7.8 m) with 10% waste.
Will 16 steps fit one continuous piece?
Often not. Check your supplier's maximum single-cut length — if it is under 7.8 m you will need two pieces and one seam.
