Expect 8 to 12 risers, a tread as shallow as 9 in and a riser up to 8 in. That combination gives about 17 in per step, so a 10 step basement flight needs roughly 14 ft 2 in before waste.

Width and reveal

A 32 in basement stair with a 27 in runner leaves only 2.5 in each side, which reads as narrow. A 24 or 26 in runner often looks better on a tight flight.

Practical choices

Basement stairs get boots and laundry baskets. A hard-wearing, mid-tone, patterned runner hides wear, and a good underlay softens what is usually a hard, echoey stair.
