Measuring runner for winder stairs

Winders are wedge-shaped treads that turn a corner without a landing. Their depth changes across the stair, so the runner’s width and position affect the cut required.

Calculate the straight steps normally, then add a winder allowance per turning tread. Be honest about the limits: winders are usually a template-and-fit job, not a tape-measure job.

How to allow for a winder tread

Measure the depth along the line the runner will follow — commonly the centre line of the runner, not the wall. The inner and outer edges need different lengths. A centre-line measurement alone cannot define the width or shape of the required cut.

Cut per step, not per flight

Most fitters cut winders as individual pieces so the leading edge stays parallel to the nosing. That means extra cut ends, extra edge finishing and cutting waste. Ask for a template-based quantity rather than choosing a universal percentage.

How much extra runner do winder stairs need?: There is no reliable extra-length multiplier for every winder. Have each turning tread measured or templated, then use an installer-specified allowance for a preliminary budget.
Can a runner be fitted over winders?: Yes, but usually as individually cut and bound pieces rather than one continuous length. It is a job for an experienced fitter.
